Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
1 Peter 4:8-10
Do you feel God leading you into missions?
We strongly want to encourage you to prayerfully consider joining us in ministry in Cambodia. There are many opportunities to serve God here and we will work alongside you to help you prepare for your trip or long stay in Cambodia. It is our goal to use you in a way that will be effective and will benefit the ministry of Crossing Cambodia and other local Christians in Cambodia.
In addition to our regular work with the street children of Battambang we partner with local churches and other NGOs to provide service opportunities for teams who wish to aid us in reaching out to the Cambodian people.
We strongly recommend the team training program provided by The Sending Place for any team who wishes to participate in overseas ministry.
We have many different projects that a team could take on!
- VBS programs for the street kids
- Small Medical Clinics and check-ups for children
- Music Outreach in partnership w/ local churches
- Leading a retreat or training for our staff
How Much Does it Cost?
The cost for teams can vary greatly depending on a lot of different factors. This can include the size of the team, what project the team is taking on and the scale of it, and what level of accommodation is required.
As a general rule of thumb, however, we suggest that you work with $2500 as a starting point. That’s $1000-$1500 for round trip plane tickets and about $500 per week of the trip. This includes accomodation, transportation, meals, basic funds for ministry, and costs of visiting the Killing Fields Memorial, Genocide Museum, and Angkor Wat.
As you become more certain of your team size, project, and commitment to coming, we will work with you to create a budget that is suitable for both you and us. We also promise never to spend money you haven’t already given us or approved of on preparations and ministry. Your team will only ever be expected to pay what you agree to prior to your trip.
Short Term Volunteers
Want to volunteer?
We can provide opportunities for you to serve God here through Crossing Cambodia for anywhere from 10 days to 6 months. There are countless opportunities from training projects to relief missions to longer teaching opportunities. If you feel that God is calling you to Cambodia for a week or a season we encourage you to contact us and pray with us about serving Him here through Crossing Cambodia!
What Can I Do?
Our most immediate need that most people can fill is teaching English. We would like both to provide English language classes to the children we sponsor to attend school as well as to conduct local outreach to the surrounding community. As an outreach project we will either have you teach out of our main office location, or partner with a local church and have you teach at their church location.
You can also join us by helping to teach other classes or by aiding us in regular outreach programs to children around Battambang. Do you have a special skill you can share? Let us know and we may be able to use that skill as part of our outreach to Battambang.
How Much Does it Cost?
The cost of volunteering as an individual tends to be different than if you are coming with a team. Each volunteer project will be different as well depending upon the related ministry costs.
Below are listed the different cost options for volunteering with Crossing Cambodia. There are different volunteering plans for different budgets and people.
For this plan we will make all the necessary arrangements for you from the moment you walk out of the airport in Phnom Penh until we drop you off again.
10 to 14 Days: $1500
1 Month: $2000
Each additional month up to 6 months: $650
Included in this cost…
- Pick up and drop off by Crossing Cambodia staff member at airport in Phnom Penh
- 3 nights in Phnom Penh at start of trip and 2 at the end
- Visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Killing Field Memorial
- Transit to Battambang
- Cost of homestay in Battambang
- Cost of breakfast and lunch and clean drinking water Mondays through Fridays.
- 4 day trip to Siem Reap to rest and visit Angkor Temple Complex (2 days for 10-14 day trips)
- Cost of regular transportation around Battambang
- Related ministry expenses.
- Visa extension as is necessary for stays beyond 1 month
* These costs do not include airfare, the cost of your entry visa, or meals eaten outside our ministry center. The entry visa may be obtained through the Cambodian Embassy in Washington, DC, online through the Cambodian E-Visa program, or upon arrival at the Phnom Penh Airport.
If you just want to meet us in Battambang and start volunteering, the basic bare bones cost is $650 per month. This includes…
- Basic registration and ministry costs
- Cost of housing in Battambang
- Cost of breakfast and lunch and clean drinking water Mondays through Fridays.
- A bicycle to get around
You are responsible for getting here, acquiring your visa, and meals eaten outside our ministry center. Crossing Cambodia can advise you on how to extend your visa accordingly. Any side trips you choose to take should be cleared on the volunteer schedule and taken at your own expense.
If you don’t need to go visit Angkor Wat but still want us to pick you up, if you feel confident enough to find your own way up to Battambang, feel you would prefer different accommodations, or if you would prefer to handle your own budget let us know! We will send you our volunteer budget planning sheet and you can work out your trip and budget according to your preferences.
** The cost of our volunteer projects cannot currently be paid for via our website. Once you’ve arranged your plane tickets we ask that please either wire money to us in advance via PayPal or MoneyGram International, or pay cash upon your arrival in Cambodia. Online payments may become available at a later date, please contact us for more information as is necessary.
Long Term Missions
Perhaps you feel that God is calling you to make a long term commitment to living and serving Him in Cambodia. Through our mission to serve God and to network with other churches and mission groups we will work with you to determine if Cambodia is where God is calling you and how you best can serve Him here.
Currently we have one long-term missionary family working with us, the Holz family. Greg Holz serves as the Mission Director by helping to develop ministries and resources for the Cambodian leadership in addition to coordinating incoming teams, volunteers, and new missionaries.
Our goal for all long-term missionaries with Crossing Cambodia is to have them work towards enabling the local Cambodian Christians to be the leaders in all our ministry projects. Whether you are teaching English or aiding in the development of new ministry, the goal of all long-term missionaries is to work towards enabling the Cambodian people to carry the gospel message to their brothers and sisters across the nation.
While our current projects are focused on street families and church networking, we remain open to God’s calling and His direction in our ministry as well. If God places before us an opportunity to serve other people we wholeheartedly intend on pursuing it. If you have a specific skill or ability that you feel God is calling you to utilize on the mission field, we will gladly work with you and carefully consider if there is an opportunity to pursue ministry with your unique gifts.
Some of the various long-term opportunities here include, but are not limited to…
- ESL courses
- Teaching computer courses
- Staff training
- Medical Outreach to the Street Families
- Developing education plans for sponsored children
We will gladly work with you to develop your long term strategy. Moving to a place like Cambodia takes a lot of thought, prayer, and preparation. We will recommend books and materials to read as well as potential training programs that can benefit you. In addition to that we will gladly walk you through the process of planning out a monthly budget and determining what your financial needs may be and can brainstorm with you to find ways for you to raise the necessary funds.
All long-term missionaries with Crossing Cambodia will need to be responsible for raising their full personal support as well as support for their specific ministry projects unless otherwise specified.
Open Volunteer Positions
While there are many different needs that volunteers can fill, here are a couple of our most pressing needs and relevant job descriptions.
One of the issues we struggle with is timely communication with donors, child sponsors, and prayer supporters. We need help getting regular reports out to people as well as helping us maintain a good social media presence.
We are seeking an individual willing to come to Cambodia and commit at least 6 months or more to helping us work on improving our communication and develop a general strategy for social media.
If you are interested please download the job description and send an email to Greg to begin the discussion about helping us out.
Voluntourism is a term that is used by a lot organizations in both positive and negative ways. We choose not to use that term as we expect our volunteers and teams to work and as we are not earning money off of them.
The costs provided are solely intended to cover the physical costs involved with setting up ministry projects and for the well-being of volunteers. No staff member or foreign missionary receives any compensation for time invested in volunteers and no funds from volunteers are directed towards salaries of any person within Crossing Cambodia.
While we do provide you with a trip to Siem Reap under certain arrangements, this is out of our belief that all our volunteers and employees need a break once in a while. All work and no play make us very dull indeed.
This BLOG POST by our Mission Director expands further on this topic and our goal of providing positive service opportunities.
The children that we work with at Crossing Cambodia are considered vulnerable and at-risk of exploitation. Because of this we require that anyone who wishes to volunteer with us that is not being sent to us by a trusted ministry partner, even for short periods of time, must be prepared to submit to a criminal background check. We do this so that we can readily demonstrate to anyone, such as government agencies in Cambodia, ministry partners, or other parties, who may be concerned about how volunteers interact with children that we are not putting these children at risk of exploitation or abuse through our programs.
Because of this requirement ALL VOLUNTEERS need to be prepared to pay the necessary fees (typically around $50 USD) for us to run background checks in their country of origin and provide us with adequate personal information in order to do so.
If you do not agree to this or cannot fulfill this requirement within 15 days prior to the start of your agreed upon volunteering dates you will be prohibited from entering Crossing Cambodia’s facilities or interacting with our staff, children, and programs.
We do not require teams and volunteers to have travel insurance. If you feel you need travel insurance in case of emergencies you can purchase it through the following website.
