Our goal is to start small and focus on quality change in the lives of a few individuals. As God provides and as we see change taking root in those we work with our prayer is that our ministry will grow and reach out to others.
The number of needs here in Cambodia that we wish we could meet is seemingly endless and we will work diligently to follow God’s leading for our ministry. Below is a list of possible ministry opportunities we’d like to eventually develop further. We ask that you take some time to look at the projects listed below and pray over them. That God will provide for our ministry and help us to grow so that in the future we may indeed have the resources to pursue these and other ministry opportunities that God may place before us.
Street Family Drop In Center
One of our long-term visions for this ministry is to acquire a parcel of land nearby to the city where we can provide temporary sleeping facilities for children who do not feel safe sleeping on the streets or in the slums of Battambang.
In addition to a dormitory for children we want to have temporary housing available for small families or single mothers and their children. These housing units will be made available for a period of 1 to 2 years while the parents undergo counseling for their addictions and other issues, participate in job training, and seek employment.
Estimated Cost: $100,000 to purchase land and build facilities plus and additional $24,000 annually to fully staff, maintain, and operate the center.
Family Housing Sponsorship Program
As we work with the children from the streets we do our best to build relationships with the family members of those children. We take time to get to know their parents and older siblings and occasionally we come across a family that is ready to make a change in their life. They are ready to trust God and put forth an effort to improve their living conditions.
These are families that we are all too happy to help.
Until we are able to build the eventual drop-in center, we hope to be able to help families through the Family Housing Sponsorship Program. This program will provide conditional, inexpensive, subsidized housing for small families for a temporary period of time up to 24 months. When a family indicates that they are willing to participate we give them the option of getting a job or entering into job training. When they choose to do either we agree to cover the cost of a small single bedroom apartment and provide food aid while they study. Upon completion of their job training program they then have the remaining time in their 24 month agreement to find work and save money before they are expected to take on responsibility for their own housing costs.
In addition to providing housing and food, we also hope to help the parents find job training programs that are suitable for them and expect them to participate in regular Bible studies with Crossing Cambodia.
Through this we hope to enable families to take control of their lives and trust in God’s provision!
To start this project we need dedicated volunteers in the US to help us receive and manage sponsorships and we will need commited staff in Cambodia to keep track of families and aid them in finding appropriate training and job opportunities.
The cost of sponsoring a family will be approximately $100 each month to cover their rent, food aid, and assistance in finding work or entering a job training program.
Boys Downtown Safe House
On the streets of downtown Battambang live a number of boys who have largely been abandoned by their families and who often say they don’t want someone to help them. They say that they are content to live without rules, to steal, to beg, and to sniff glue and do other drugs. Most people ignore them and many more have given up hope of helping them.
Truth be told, we haven’t found the right solution for them yet.
The eventual goal of the Boys Downtown Safe House will be to provide these young boys a safe haven. To give them a chance to clean up, eat a decent meal, and sleep securely for at least one night. When they come in we want to have optional Bible studies and activities for them, but the main goal is to build a relationship and trust with them by meeting their most basic of needs. By caring for them without a lot of restrictions on their daily lives outside the Safe House we hope to gain their trust, get them involved in a conversation about their futures, share God’s love with them, and eventually find a solution that will work for them.
Estimated Cost: $5000 start up costs and $600 per month to rent a facility, hire a counselor to live in the house, and provide a nightly meal.
Lost Cause Cafe
So many of the street kids are looked down upon in Cambodian society and are extremely difficult to work with. Because of this many of them are written off as “lost causes” and ignored by some organizations in favor of kids from the slums that are comparatively easy to deal with. In order to raise awareness of our goal to reach these kids and change the stigma around them as well as generating revenue that can help to offset our operating costs, we hope to eventually be able to open a cafe and gift shop aimed at tourists. We hope to support the ministry and show people that through Christ’s love, no child is a “lost cause”.
Estimated Cost: $25,000 initial start up costs.
Day Care Center
There are many parents in Cambodia who feel they are unable to provide for their families because they need to watch their children. We would like to be able to open a day care center to both meet this need and generate revenue to help support the ongoing ministries of Crossing Cambodia.
Estimated Cost: $15,000 initial start up costs.
Crossing Cambodia Guesthouse
As the tourist industry in Cambodia continues to develop there is a growing need for hotels and guesthouses that offer high quality service and comfortable accommodations at reasonable prices. A guesthouse would enable us to both raise awareness of our ministries and create a considerable source of revenue to support and offset our ministry expenses.
We would like to acquire a building in Battambang where we could open up a guesthouse that specializes in mission and service teams that come to Cambodia. Crossing Cambodia Guesthouse would provide accommodations at a reasonable price as well as make available community space for team meetings and planning with a guarantee of privacy when necessary. In addition to teams the guesthouse would be open to other guests and tourists travelling through Battambang to help ensure a consistent stream of revenue.
This project not only will require considerable start-up capitol, but will also need the experience and acumen of capable business people who can help to create a solid promotional and operational plan.
The Lord’s Table
Our goal is to be a community oriented organization. Part of doing that is looking for ways to encourage fellowship among the diverse people from different economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. One way we envision doing this is by partnering with local churches to encourage fellowship by sharing a meal and worshiping the Lord together.
The idea of the Lord’s Table is based upon similar ministries in the US where churches provide a meal for all who wish to attend and worship and teach to people as they sit and eat and engage in fellowship together. We hope to invite the poor, the broken hearted, and those who wish to just have some good conversation with us.
Estimated Cost: $40 per week to cover cost of food.
In 2014 our goal is to develop resources and hopefully open a preschool.
Many of the families we serve have very young children that are not yet ready to attend regular school. As they need to be looked after their parents may be unable to seek work or their older siblings may be too busy to attend school.
Epiphany Preschool is intended to serve children aged 3-5 to prepare them for regular schooling and to aid parents and siblings by freeing them up to either attend school, seek job training, or find gainful employment. Through providing this assistance we hope to show God’s love to these children and their families.
Epiphany Preschool is also intended to be the eventual starting point for a small Christian school that will focus on individual development for disadvantaged children from the streets and around Battambang.
As the world develops and becomes more technologically complicated, it will be important for many people in Cambodia to have computer skills. We hope that over time we’ll be able to acquire good computers so that we can teach these skills not only to the kids in our programs, but to others who we may be connected to.
We would like to eventually acquire as many as 20 computers so that we can two groupings. We hope to utilize basic computers for beginner courses and then to use more sophisticated computers to offer advanced computing, media, and web design courses.
Estimated Cost: $450 per standard computer, $800 per advanced computer, and $250 per month to pay full time computer instructors.
